Niederwald

MY NAME IS NIEDERWALD

My old alleyways were built as early as the 14th century and I have not changed essentially during the past hundred years. Historians describe me as being full of character and one of the most intact places in Goms. I was originally built around the Rottenbrücke (Rhône bridge) first mentioned in 1250. The historical trading routes from Ernen crossed here to get to the other side of the valley. I am proud of my ancient buildings and my beautiful church. I also like to boast about the people who called me their home: Hotel king Cäsar Ritz was born here in 1850. A visit to his memorial, his grave and his birthplace are well worthwhile. Besides the hospitality, I host art as well: The painter Lorenz Justin Ritz (1796-1870) lived under my roof. Today, the ancient village as well as the well preserved cultural and natural landscape are part the Nature Park Binntal.
